Basics of Isometrics

Isometrics can be the best form of exercise for you if your goals are to lose weight, lose inches, increase flexibility, be able to breathe better, and have more energy. Most programs are abandoned within the first month because of poor results. However, choosing the right program that will work for you is a challenge that requires some thought and study.

Most people give up on some fitness programs because they are too demanding and painful. Isometric exercises are successful because there is no trauma to your body or your muscles. They can be done in the privacy of your own home and the low, one-time cost of a good isometric exercise DVD is all you need.

Isometric exercises involve muscular contractions performed against fixed resistance. This type of exercising can build muscle and help tone very effectively. Best of all, this can all be done without going to the gym.

Isometrics challenges your muscles to gain strength just by forcing them to move against the resistance or weight of any object. The good thing is that the object does not have to actually be moved in order to obtain stronger muscles or a more toned physique. When the resistance is so high that the object you are resisting cannot move then muscles still become stronger just by trying. The simple task of pushing against a wall or pulling up on a window that is stuck can cause an isometric contraction which can build biceps as well as if you used a dumbell. Your muscles are working without shortening or lengthening.

The biggest limitation of isometric exercise is that each isometric hold only increases your muscle's strength in that exact position. You are not accomplishing full range of motion. However, this form of exercise can be ideal for most people who want a good physique without using a gym or weights.
