Isometrics are a type of strength training where the joint and muscle are worked against something immovable or held in a resistant position without changing the angle of the joint or the length of the muscle. It is mainly based on contracting and relaxing muscles.
Isometrics can be performed just about anywhere, whether you are sitting, standing or lying down. They do not require a large amount of exertion. Isometric exercises are specifically located and do not train through a whole range of motion like dynamic exercises do. They are good for strengthening those that have had surgery or illness that prevent them from getting out of bed and exercising due to their condition.
If you are wanting to work just the muscles without a full workout, then Isometrics would be a good way for you to do so. But your body needs more than just the muscle worked out. Your body needs to be stretched at certain times. Higher impact exercises move the blood through system, which in turn boosts your metabolism, improves your lung capacity, and aids in getting blood and oxygen to the brain. Higher impact exercises also help to tone and burn calories quicker than low impact exercises.
It is understandable, that with some medical or physical conditions, Isometrics may be the only avenue left to get exercise and work your muscles. Another advantage of low impact exercises like Isometrics, is the fact that they provide a slow but steady burn of calories, whereas high impact burns calories faster but also allows the body to build up a resistance to burning calories.
In order to have the perfect combination, you need to develop an exercise program that combines Isometrics with higher impact exercises. This will allow you to tone and build muscle as well as burn fat and calories.
